Based on longterm ethnographic fieldwork in Los Angeles, California with professional psychics, this talk examines the sense of intuition. Intuition is not a “extra” or “sixth sense” but rather a powerful and inclusive sense that requires the development of multiple other senses. Southern California has a thriving industry of professional psychics, many of whom claim to be skilled “clairvoyants” or “clairaudients.” Through examples of psychics, tarot readings, and other spiritual matters in Los Angeles, this talk will examine the uses of intuition in the aspirations of psychics and their clients.
